SANTA MONICA PONY BASEBALL

Youth Baseball at Historic Los Amigos Park since 1952

Select Program

The Select Program provides the option for more advanced players to play baseball at a more challenging level during the Fall recreational season.

Select is intended to allow advanced players to experience a higher level of competition without compromising the integrity of the primary recreational league.

Select IS NOT All-Stars. It is an entirely separate program. Although players will continue to advance their level of play through the program, it is not a guarantee that those players chosen to play on a Select team will make a future SMPB All-Star team. In addition, participation in Select is not required to be selected for a future All-Star team.

The Select Program is available for the Shetland, Pinto, Mustang, Bronco, and Pony divisions.

PLAYER SELECTION

Playing on the Fall Select team is a privilege. Players will be nominated by their previous coach’s recommendation. Coaches will recommend players based on skill level, potential for growth, coachability, and attitude. Team  selection will be made by the Select Team Managers and coaches with the approval and final signoff from the Athletic Director. Selected players will be invited to participate by the Athletic Director.

To be eligible for the Select Program, a player must first be registered for the upcoming season via the SMPB website, which is required to ensure all players are covered by the SMPB insurance and liability policy. For players that are chosen to participate on a Select team during the Fall but are unable to participate on a Fall Rec team, an exception can be made if the player can show that they have prior commitments (i.e. other sports or extracurricular activities) that will cause them to miss the majority of games/practices for a Fall Rec team.

MANAGER SELECTION

To be eligible to manage a Fall Select team, the volunteer must have managed or coached at Santa Monica Pony the prior season, and/or must have at least one year of experience managing or coaching (i.e., a dugout coach) at the All-Star level in any division. Applicants who meet that criteria and are interested in a Select Manager position must notify the Athletic Director. The SMPB Executive Board will approve Managers for each team.

GAMES

Select games will be coordinated with other local Pony Select Teams (i.e. Cheviot, Wilshire, South Bay, etc.). Additional games may also be coordinated with local travel baseball clubs. Game rules will follow those of Pony Official All Star Tournaments rules.

FEES

On top of the rec league registration fee, there will be additional cost that will include umpire fees, tournament fees (if applicable), and a uniform (jersey and cap).
